Though both of the twins are extrememly dependent on each other, Hikaru is perhaps even more dependent on Kaoru than the other way around. While Hikaru is usually the leader of their endeavors, he also seems to be more insecure than his brother and is very easily swept up in his emotions. Hikaru is very protective about the people he truly loves and gets jealous whenever those people seem to be getting to close to anyone else.
He has a slight disdain for people, since having very little interaction with others prior to joining the Host Club, because most people see he and Kaoru as interchangeable instead of as two individuals. As an individual, Hikaru is said - by both Hatori (artist) and Haruhi in the manga - to have a slightly more nefarious personality, meaning that he's more likely to use harsh words and actions. Because of this he doesn't really think about what he says and is quite blunt at times, such as not being reluctant to admit that some people are just toys. Because of this outlook, Hikaru gets bored easily, and he and Kaoru have gone as far as staging major fights between them just because of this boredom. |

Ever since childhood, Hikaru and Kaoru were inseparable and it's really unknown if even their own parents were able to tell them apart. They had all the ever wanted growing up, as their family was very wealthy, but still longed for someone to play with them, and to regard them as individuals. A maid they had had at one time had pretended to be interested in their little game - "Which one is Hikaru?" - but it had turned out to be an act so that she could get the combination to the family safe. This only pushed their trust towards other people farther back. They didn't really care about hurting other's feelings, because those who didn't care who was who deserved it.
Suou Tamaki approached them while they were in their third year of middle school, inviting them to join him in creating a Host Club once they got to high school. The twins refused but then gave in on the condition that he had to tell them apart within a certain time limit. Although he failed the "Who is Hikaru?" game, he refused to give up, and the twins dubbed him 'idiot of lords' (tono). They ended up joining the Host Club, even though he couldn't tell them apart.
At the Host Club, Hikaru and Kaoru imply an incestuous relationship for fun, making an entire show of it because of the "boys love" fans for customers, Hikaru usually taking the more dominant role. When the transfer student Fujioka Haruhi joins the Host Club because of debt, she becomes the first person who can tell them apart and without a second guess, and this is really their first step out of an 'us' world and into the 'them' world. |
